DEFINITION
An inclusive term for diseases caused by Bordetella bronchiseptica, a highly contagious aerobic bacteria that is a primary respiratory pathogen for dogs and cats and can cause acute or chronic respiratory disease
RISK FACTORS
Increased incidence in dogs and cats exposed to other animals with respiratory infection or housed with large numbers of other animals (shelters, boarding kennels, breeding facilities)
PROGNOSIS AND OUTCOME

Disease is usually curable; uncomplicated cases resolve within approximately 2 weeks

Severe (potentially fatal) pneumonia may occur in young or debilitated animals
